Preparation Methods Of Amorphous Boron Powder

Ultrafine amorphous boron powder is an ideal high-energy additive for lean oxygen-rich fuel propellants and is a high-energy solid fuel. Widely used in the synthesis of new materials, because of its large specific surface area and high calorific value, it is used as a boron-rich fuel and as an initiator for safety vessels.

 

The elemental boron has two forms of amorphous and crystalline form, and the amorphous form is a brown powder, and the crystalline form is generally grayish black. Boron is a poor conductor, and the electrical conductivity and specific heat increase with increasing temperature.


 

At present, amorphous boron powder is generally prepared by molten salt electrolysis, diborane pyrolysis, boron halide hydrogen reduction, melt electrolysis, sodium hydride reduction method and metal thermal reduction, and another is based on magnesium thermal reduction, using self-propagation. The method of preparing boron powder by the metallurgical process is becoming more and more widely used today.

 

The preparation of amorphous boron powder by modern molten salt electrolysis has greatly improved the control reaction conditions in the past few years, but there are still some shortcomings that need further optimization.

 

Self-propagating milling technology has the advantages of simple process, high purity, small particle size and high activity. It is combined with magnesium thermal reduction method to optimize the reaction process, this method has become the main method.
