Iron boride is an iron alloy mainly composed of boron and iron. It also contains impurities such as aluminum, silicon, carbon, manganese and copper. It is a boron additive for iron and steel smelting, cast iron, amorphous alloy and magnetic materials.


Iron boride contains 9% boron ~ 25%, classified according to the content of carbon and boron. There are also nickel boron (B>14%), cobalt boron (B>12%), chromium boron (B>12%), aluminum boron (B2.5%~3.5%) and various composite boron alloys for high temperature. Used in the production of alloys, magnetic alloys, spray materials and aluminum alloys.


The melting point of iron boride is 1652 °C, the relative density of 7.15 (18 °C), soluble in dilute and concentrated nitric acid, concentrated and 1:1 hydrochloric acid solution, 1:1 H2SO4 and HClO4, in the form of α- at low temperature, It exists in a β-shape having the same Tc (602K) at a high temperature. It changes from α to β with the change of magnetic moment. Both can form ferromagnetics. Reacts with boiling water. The texture is hard, refractory and corrosion resistant.


The synthesis method comprises the following steps: mixing boron and iron in a molar ratio of 1:1, and co-heating in argon at 1200 to 1300 °C; FeS and BCl3 are reacted in a hydrogen gas at a temperature higher than 500 °C or a reaction between a ferrous chloride solution and sodium borohydride (NaBH4 ).
